Authors helping authors through BookFunnel's group promos
Before I get to the main subject of this post, let me remind you that there is just one day left for you to vote on the cover for “Pyro Pastor,” book #2 in “Catalina’s Chronicles” trilogy. You can find that post to cast your vote (for red or blue) by clicking “Read full story” below:
Now, on to today’s business: Group promos.
As a self-published author, you not only write the book, but also fill many other important roles throughout the publishing process. While we can hire out for some things, like cover design and editing, until we have a huge following and backlist, or are independently wealthy, odds are good that we will be doing these jobs ourselves.
One of the most important, non-writing jobs of an independent author is marketing. As if sharing your words in printed form wasn’t far enough outside your comfort zone, you must also spread the word about your books over and over and over again. It’s the only way that the people who will love your books actually find your books.
The challenge is that the skillset you need to write the book is very different than the one you need to market it. Without the reach of a traditional publisher, you must learn to get creative to find your authentic audience. Some authors start by advertising on Facebook or Amazon the minute they publish their first book. But all the successful indie authors I know advise against this. Until you have three published books, ads just don’t make sense financially.
That leaves organic marketing. This might be tapping into your social networks, sharing with your friends and family, promoting yourself on other people’s podcasts or finding author group promos to participate in.
Which brings me to the purpose of this post. Group promos are where books of a feather flock together. The promo organizer announces the specific genre they are looking for and then shares the rules of what kinds of books are allowed. Since my books are conspiracy thrillers, I will be looking for promos with other thrillers.
In order to take part in a group promo, each author must share it with their readers. I think this is a great idea because, presumably, people who like my books will enjoy the chance to discover other books in that same genre. Whenever I join one of these promos I will share them here with you all to help you discover new books you would like to read. This week I’m participating in my first group promo:
✒️ “First in Series” is a promo for books that are:
In the Mystery, Suspense or Thriller genres
Crime stories
The first book in a series (Death Wounds is book #1 in Catalina Chronicles trilogy)
Available in Kindle Unlimited (you did know that you can read Death Wounds for free in KU, right?)
Is not a romance novel or erotica
Fits Death Wounds perfectly, don’t you think? Just click the image or button below the image to see this promo.
This promo has dozens of other books in it, so click the link and see which ones may interest you. They’re all available to read for free on Kindle Unlimited if you’re a member, and reasonably priced even if you aren’t. Remember, these are all independent authors, so please consider supporting them!
I’ll share another group promo here next Tuesday. Let me know if you enjoy getting these or not. Here’s hoping you discover a new author that you love!
